Boating in Cold Weather
Oregon winters can be brisk, but that doesn’t mean you have to quit taking your boat out on the water! Whether you prefer boating off the Oregon Coast or down the Willamette River, you can enjoy the peace, quiet, and beauty of winter from your boat, provided you take the time to prepare correctly. Here are some tips for successful and safe boating in cold weather.
Bundle Up in Layers
Wearing layers is the best way to stay cozy and warm on your boat in the cold. A thin layer comprised of a long-sleeved shirt and leggings or thermal underwear can go under your standard jeans and shirt. You can then add some lightweight sweaters, your life jacket, and your overcoat. Bring extra layers with you, along with warm blankets for yourself and your passengers. Wool socks, waterproof boots, a wool knit cap, a scarf, and fingerless gloves will complete your ensemble.
Check the Forecast
Look up the weather for the place you intend to take your boat before you go so that you can decide if the conditions are favorable. Delay your trip if a blizzard is on the horizon, or if high winds or heavy fog are coming your way. You should also keep yourself updated with the weather while on your boat by using the NOAA app or checking the radio forecast.
Pack Emergency Gear
In addition to your standard supplies, including snacks and drinks, you should bring some emergency supplies. Additional bottled water, warm blankets and coats, a fire extinguisher, signal flares, pocket hand warmers, and an emergency radio will help you stay safe if there’s a problem on the water.
